In his 1732 book, Gnomologia, Thomas Fuller, prolific author and compiler of proverbs, penned the often repeated “March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb.” Perhaps he was referencing the constellations of Leo, (the lion), rising in the east in March, and Aries, (the ram or lamb), setting in the west in April, or as an English citizen living in a northern latitude, he simply provided an adage giving us a sense of hope for warmer days ahead.
Spring in Wells and Ogunquit, Maine, is a wonderful time to experience the coastal beauty of the area as it transitions from winter to the warmer months. Here's what you can expect in terms of weather, nature, and activities during spring:
Weather
Spring temperatures in Wells and Ogunquit can vary quite a bit. In March, daytime highs average around 40-50 degrees and nighttime lows in the 30’s. By April, temperatures begin to warm up, with highs approaching 50-60. Rain showers are typically light to moderate and contribute to our area’s late spring and summer lush vegetation.
Nature and Scenery
Migratory birds are returning to the region. If you’re a birdwatching enthusiast, it’s a great time to see species like warblers, shorebirds, and even the occasional osprey. Join a “A Walk to Welcome Spring,” on March 20, 6:30-8:30 am at Mt. Agamenticus. Donation of $8.00 requested, reserve at ndensmore@yorkmaine.org. Or, take the guided nature walk “Welcome Spring Walk” and discover signs of spring at Wells Reserve at Laudholm on Saturday, April 5, 2025, 10:00 am-12:00 pm. $8.00/person, reserve at suzanne@wellsnerr.org or call Suzanne at 207-646-1555, ext. 116.
Coastal Beauty
Ogunquit and Wells Beach are quieter in the spring, but they’re still beautiful. While it might be too chilly for swimming, the beaches are great for peaceful walks with fewer people than in the summer months. The spring sunlight, combined with dramatic coastal views, makes for a relaxing experience. Visit Marginal Way, a popular coastal walking path in Ogunquit. With the weather transitioning from winter to spring, it’s perfect for a peaceful stroll along the rocky cliffs with ocean views.
Local Seafood and Dining
Spring marks the beginning of the lobster and clam season in Maine, so it's a great time to enjoy fresh seafood. Many local restaurants open up in spring, serving freshly caught lobster, clams, oysters, and other delicacies. Currently open, Hobbs Harborside Restaurant provides fresh seafood with a view of Wells Harbor. Located at 352 Harbor Road, Wells, Maine. www.hobbsharborside.com. 207-646-2200, currently closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
